Biomedical Fellowship Applicant FAQs

How Do I Apply?

Our Fellowship application process is fully through our online portal. Individuals may not apply directly. Participating institutions will circulate the fellowship announcement, detailing application procedures and requirements. Institutions will be responsible for submitting the application on behalf of prospective Fellows. Prospective fellows must provide their institution the necessary information to facilitate this process.

Who can apply for this fellowship?

Applications for this fellowship are accepted by invitation only. Candidates are selected by an internal nomination process at participating research institutions and reviewed by an independent committee. Individuals may not apply directly to Revson.

When can I expect the fellowship announcement to be circulated?

Revson sends the fellowship announcement to participating institutions at the beginning of January each year. Your institution will circulate the announcement soon thereafter.

Do I have to be a U.S. citizen to be eligible?

No. This fellowship is open to legal residents of the United States as well as US citizens. Candidates need not be permanent residents; however, in order to be eligible for the fellowship you must obtain appropriate visa documentation that is valid for the entire duration of the fellowship.

What materials are required to complete an online application?

You will need to submit and/or upload the following to your institution (not to Revson) using the online portal:

  • Your applicant information to be completed using the online portal
  • Your CV and bibliography
  • Your mentor’s CV and bibliography or biographical sketch in NIH format
  • Three letters of recommendation, including one from your mentor
  • Research proposal
  • More detailed requirements are outlined in the fellowship announcement from your institution.

What stage of research do you fund?

Eligible applicants must have already completed two or three years of postdoctoral research on the same project at one institution. This fellowship is specifically for researchers entering their third or fourth year of postdoctoral research.

What if I have completed more than one postdoc or switched labs/research projects?

Eligibility will be determined on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of the selection committee.

How are winners selected?

After an internal selection process, each participating institution nominates two candidates. Nominations are then sent to an independent selection committee, which chooses the finalists.

What does it mean if I have been selected as a finalist?

You have been chosen by the selection committee to receive the award, pending approval by Revson’s Board of Directors. Generally, all finalists are approved.

How many fellows receive funding?

The Foundation generally awards up to eight fellowships every year.

What is the start date of the fellowship?

Fellows may choose to begin their fellowship, on the first of the month, anytime between July and October in the year it is awarded. Please note, if the applicant is selected, the start date, chosen by the applicant on the application will be the start date of their Revson Fellowship. This date will be considered final and will be used for calculating the grant amount. Any changes to this date will need to be submitted to the Foundation for consideration and approval.

Can I defer my award?

While the Foundation generally discourages deferment, the selection committee will consider deferments on a case-by-case basis.

What is the breakdown of award funds?

We provide 125% of the current NIH salary for your year as a postdoc and cover your institution’s fringe rate. This amount is adjusted for the second year of the fellowship. We offer an additional $10,000 in operational support and $3,500 for travel and conferences, per year.
