Vital City advances new thinking and strategies for thriving cities

By publishing a continuum of perspectives on how to strengthen the city’s social fabric and civic life, Vital City is a unique and important addition to the City’s public discourse and local news sector. Using accessible and creative formats, their blend of action-oriented, forward thinking policy journalism is poised to shape and influence civic discourse and city policy.

Vital City is the first urban policy journal to launch in New York City in 30 years

2025 – Launched in 2022, Vital City seeks out new ideas and research – from academia, government, community organizations and other sources – and makes them accessible and understandable to the people who shape urban policy and practice. Vital City is devoted to the idea that neighborhood safety and vitality starts with a vibrant civic life and public square co-produced by government working together with residents, business, and non-governmental organizations. Focusing on New York City, they advance new thinking and effective action in a wide range of areas that affect the well-being of New Yorkers, including architecture, culture, housing, safety, transportation, and more.

Through a policy journal, public convenings, and data analysis, Vital City centers evidence and optimism about New York City and the future of cities. In New York City, they are filling an important void and are one of the only venues for hearing from diverse political perspectives, engaging in civil conversation, and sharing evidence-driven policy ideas.

I know from my experience as Deputy Mayor how hard it is for government decision makers in New York to identify new ideas that are grounded in evidence and that can be easily translated into policy. That’s why the launch of Vital City is such good news. It promises to be a valuable source of new thinking that is both practical and actionable.
