CRAIG NEWMARK GRADUATE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM—A cohort of 30 teachers from 30 public high schools in New York City has been selected to participate in the Journalism For All Professional Development starting this month at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.
Journalism For All is an ambitious initiative by the Youth Journalism Coalition to support high school journalism and grow the journalism pipeline in the United States. The 30 teachers will receive six months of training as well as continued support as they start teaching a year-long journalism course at their high schools in the Fall of 2025.
Just under 27% of New York City public high schools have a student news publication, compared with over a decade ago, when 50% of NYC public high schools had a newspaper and/or a journalism program (according to studies by Baruch College Prof. Geanne Belton and Brooklyn College Prof. Jessica Siegel). What’s worse, only 7 of the 100 schools with the highest poverty rates have a student publication.
The Journalism for All teacher training is led by Katina Paron, a foremost expert in teen journalism, and J+, the professional arm of the Newmark J-School and supported by The Charles H. Revson Foundation.
