Healing minds and bodies from Rikers

DAILY NEWS—July 12, 2024—Each week members of the New York Jewish Coalition for Criminal Justice Reform board the Q100 bus and travel over the bridge to Rikers Island to worship with people in custody awaiting trial. We are welcomed with warmth and gratitude by the staff and those in custody as we pray, sing, connect with one another, and learn the weekly Torah portion.

For those in custody, these services, led by the rabbinic chaplains, are a rare bright spot — a space of respite and spiritual reflection in a place of violence and isolation. For our members, these services are a powerful reminder of the ongoing human rights crisis in our own backyard.
