CRAIG NEWMARK GRADUATE SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM—March 1, 2024—Three Newmark students have notched summer data journalism internships at two top nonprofit newsrooms — becoming the first to gain crucial work experience opportunities through the J-School’s Equity Through Data Project.
Ashley Borja and Max Rivera will be spending the summer at THE CITY, while Mia Hollie is heading to Chalkbeat’s New York newsroom. Each student will earn $8,000 for 10 weeks work, thanks to a generous grant from the Charles H. Revson Foundation.
Two of the students will be chosen to extend their internships into the fall, while one will ultimately earn a one-year, full-time post-graduate slot at THE CITY, beginning in January 2025. Next year, Newmark students will get the chance to apply for even more data internships, funded by Revson.
The internships are a key element of the recently launched Equity Through Data Project, which aims to train students from underrepresented backgrounds to become highly sought data reporters.
